Arrest Made on AMPM Assault

On December 20, 2016, detectives of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau arrested Larry Ray Richey, 21, of Rio Linda for the assault of Lawrence Windham which occurred on December 12, 2016.

A little before 1:00 p.m. on December 12, 2016, the Sheriff’s Communication Center received a 911 call regarding an elderly man who was assaulted in the 3900 block of Watt Avenue (AM/PM).  The caller stated the victim needed medical attention for an assault that occurred near the gas pumps.

Deputies responded to the scene and located the victim, later identified as Lawrence Windham, 85, of Sacramento.  The victim was suffering from several facial injuries incurred during the assault.  The victim refused medical attention since he was already on his way to the doctor prior to the assault.    Later in the evening, the victim complained of physical discomfort while at his residence.  The victim had a medical emergency while there and was pronounced deceased.  The Sacramento County Coroner’s office is investigating the cause of death which is still undetermined at this time.

The victim pulled into the pumps at the gas station very near Richey’s vehicle.  The victim pumped his gas, and was later confronted by Richey.  Richey then assaulted the victim, striking him multiple times in the face causing traumatic injury.

Larry Richey was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail for elder abuse and battery causing great bodily injury.  He is being held on $150,000 bail, and is scheduled to be arraigned on December 22, 2016.

The immediate response from the public was overwhelming, and assisted in the identification and investigation into Richey.  This partnership between the media, community, and law enforcement is a perfect example of how we can continue to work together to keep our streets safer and stand with the victims and victims’ families.
